By Jaye
This is one great little machine. Bought this to replace my aging IBM/Lenovo X60 that's been my road warrior for years. First tried an Asus 1005 because they had such good ratings--what a mistake! They keyboard was awful, with poor responsiveness and that da** little right shift key that I just could not get used to. And I really had issues with the touchpad, but I thought it was just me as I was used to the Trackpoint on my X60. So I took the plunge and bought this Lenovo S10-3. What a gem!! The keyboard is wonderful! Great tactile feel and responsiveness. The shift keys are normal size and the spacing and layout of the whole keyboard is perfect. And it feels very solid and well made--no sagging or flex. And the touchpad has won me over too. The scroll works well (and only when I want it too--no more inadvertent scrolling or continued scrolling after I want to stop) and the cursor control is very consistent. OK, I still have to use two hands to drag-and-drop, 'cause I can't work the left mouse button with my thumb while keeping my index finger perfectly still. I guess that's beyond the ablilities of my stiff old fingers.
As usual, you will want to delete a bunch of the pre-loaded junk that comes with the machine. Wi-fi is good, but I have not yet traveled extensively with this netbook. Video playback is way better than the Asus--very little stutter or freeze frames. Battery life is superb, but the recharge time seems a little slow. I can live with that.
All in all, a spectacular machine. Wish I would have tried Lenovo first! Anyone wanna buy a nearly-new Asus??

I have had my S-10-3 for about six months now.
Pros:
*Decent specs, especially if you can find this on sale.
*Comfortable keyboard - it really wasn't an issue moving from a regular computer to this netbook keyboard.
*Great size and weight. It is easily portable. I am a university instructor, and rather than typing up my notes and printing them out, I often just bring the netbook to class and look at the notes on the screen.
Cons:
*A lot of bloatware... it took about four hours to delete all of the software I didn't need off of the computer.
*Build quality. The plastic lid is easily scratched. The bottom is also made of metal painted black. The paint bubbled up and easily scratched off. The rubber feet also came easily unglued.
*It can be difficult to click using the touchpad.
*Over the past month or so, some of the keys on the keyboard have become occasionally unresponsive.
*Lots of glare on the screen.
A friend has a 12" Thinkpad and it feels much more solidly built than the S-10-3.

I didn't buy this on Amazon, but directly from Lenovo through their Stanford University store. It's actually an Ideapad s10-3 0647-35U.
I was looking for a ultra-portable device to take around campus to surf the internet, write e-mails, and some light schoolwork, like Excel. I loved it until it broke - which was 9 months after I purchased it.
Technically, the machine still works, but the plastic hinge cover broke off, making the plastic parts (cover & bezel) snap out of place. It's no wonder, since the machine relies on these covers to keep the hinge in line.
Anyways, I contacted Customer Support to see if it was covered under the Limited Warranty. I thought about just gluing the piece back to the bezel and snapping everything back in place. But hey, if it was still under warranty, why not get it professionally fixed?
Well that was a fiasco. If you want the details, their outlined here:
<...>
Long story short, the plastic part wasn't covered in the warranty, even though I was told it was. I didn't want to pay the $300 to get to fixed by Lenovo, so I had them send it back. They sent it back without the broken piece, so I couldn't even glue it back myself. So my situation got WORSE by using their (non-existant) Customer Service.
I chose to ignore their bad reputation for Customer Service and paid the price. Be sure to think about that when buying Lenovo products. It simply seems like they don't really care.
And my problem isn't an isolated case:
<...>
I was a fan of Lenovo, but that experience has galvanized me to spread the word about their lack of customer service and poor design.
